August 31, 2026’s departures are the biggest of the run, including the set most people think of as the line’s centrepiece:
Bowser’s Castle (72039) is the one to pay attention to. At 1,068 pieces and $99.99 it was the largest and most expensive Mario Kart set LEGO made, and it left with a 4.9★ rating — the combination that historically drives the sharpest post-retirement price moves. Piranha Plant Power-Up Pursuit (72044) is the curiosity: it retired holding a perfect 5.0★ owner score.

What they’re worth now
Retirement is the point where LEGO stops setting the price and supply does. A few things worth knowing before you chase one of these:
- Size and rating drive the premium. The small sets here — Yoshi Bike at $14.99, Standard Kart at $19.99 — were produced in volume and tend to sit near retail for a long time. The $99.99 Bowser’s Castle is where the movement usually is.
- Give it a few months. Prices on freshly retired sets are noisy. Sellers test high numbers early; the real floor shows up once the last retail stock clears.
- Sealed vs. opened. A factory-sealed box carries the premium. Opened-but-complete copies cost noticeably less and are the better buy if you actually want to build it.
- Check several listings. Treat any single asking price as one data point, and put shipping into the total before you decide something is a deal.
